In 1881 construction commenced on a two storey rendered dwelling and college for Alexander Sutherland, journalist and schoolmaster. The formal, symmetrical and simple building was designed by architects Henderson and Smart, and erected by Charles Butler. Carlton College flourished under Alexander Sutherland, its first schoolmaster who, in 1901, went on to become registrar of the University of Melbourne and a lecturerer in English language and literature.
