Statement of Significance

The North Carlton cable tram complex, opened in February 1889, is of major historical and architectural importance on a national and possibly international basis.
This is on account of its ability to demonstrate more aspects of the operation of Melbourne's renowned cable tram network than any other surviving building. It includes the last surviving relatively intact car shed constructed by the Melbourne Tramways Trust combined with a relatively intact engine house. Both are constructed in the simple decorative brick style used by the Tramways Trust for its buildings.
It has important associations with the growth of the distinctive retail development along Rathdowne Street.
