Statement of Significance

Victoria's only model lodging house complex, of 1884, distinctively planned around a courtyard bridged by galleries giving access to a central stair tower, and significant as a monument to the philanthropy of the leading actor and theatrical entrepreneur George Selth Coppin and as one of the more austere works of the Boom-period architect William Pitt, using a stripped version of Modern Gothic. The buildings have suffered some alterations, including the sandblasting of the external walls and the roofing of the court.
