Statement of Significance

The former Hawthorn Tramways Trust depot complex at Wallen Road, Hawthorn, is significant at the national level as a substantially intact and imposing application of the American Romanesque style to an early tramway building. It recalls the importance of the undertaking in the pre Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board years and forms a group with the nearby Yarra River bridge overhead wire staunchions. It compares with other Trust buildings, especially including the earlier Prahran & Malvern Tramways Board Coldblo Road depot but also Kew (Prahran & Malvern Tramways Board). The buildings should be interpreted in the context of the former Hawthorn Tramways Trust's Wattle Park, which although developed by the Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board was initiated by the Trust as an entrepreneurial venture with substantial community benefits.
