The former warehouse is constructed in bluestone. It has two floors and extensive cellars. The architect was Leonard Terry and the building was erected in 1859 for Messrs. Levicks and Piper, wholesale ironmongers.
This is one of the oldest and finest bluestone warehouses in the CBD. It is one of the few survivors of a large number of solidly constructed warehouses which owed their existence to the presence of wharves on the Yarra nearby. The King Street arcade is a fine example of the conservative classic style of Leonard Terry and expresses the office and trading aspects of the building. The more utilitarian rear elevation with arched window and door openings and deep keystones is equally distinctive.
