Statement of Significance

The row of four terrace houses, Dorset Terrace, at 114-120 Hotham Street, was erected in 1883 on a speculative basis by Ray Noble, a building contractor. Additions were carried out in 1887. The Noble family owned the premises until the late 1940s. The two storey rendered brick structure has two storey cast iron verandahs on the street facade and a cornice and balustrade with prominent name plate. This is a notable terrace in the boom classical style. The typical composition of four repetitive units has a fine cast iron verandah. The dominating feature of the terrace is the giant name-plate. It is an essential part of the East Melbourne precinct and a typical example of a building type which is a distinctive feature of inner suburban Melbourne. The cast iron palisade fence is compatible with the terrace. The cast iron brackets and fringe have been removed from both floors. It is possible that several urns have been removed from the parapet.
