The building has important associations with the Henty family and Henry Henty in particular. Henry was a leading Victorian merchant. The residence was originally named Tarring after the village in Sussex from where the Henty family originated.
Henty's House is important for its association with Ruyton, a very important private girl's school. Henty House was purchased and used by the School from 1921 after Mrs. Henty's death.
