Statement of Significance

A fascinating complex of three churches and associated buildings, dating from the mid 1860s to 1930, graphically illustrating the history of the East Melbourne Catholic parish. Each of the churches is of architectural significance in its own right:

Church of 1865 was built as a combined chapel/school and is a rare ecclesiastical example of W Wardell 's use of brickwork.

The church of 1900 by McCrae and Toole is a unique design, in what might be termed "red-brick Irish Romanesque", apparently inspired by the Celtic Revival, the Arts and Crafts movement, and Australian nationalism. (Classified State 03/08/1998)

The 1930 church designed by W P Connolly in an Italian Romanesque style is a landmark in the area, and a good example of the last phase of Romanesque Revival architecture in Australia.
