Statement of Significance

The row of three terrace houses were erected in 1868-69 by F Williams for T Russell, a produce merchant and auctioner. The architects were Crough and Wilson. Russell never occupied any of the houses, however his family owned the terrace until 1910. The facade of the two storey brick terrace was originally composed of exposed brickwork with stucco mouldings.
This is a distinctive terrace and an important work of the architect Crouch and Wilson. Designed in the conservative classical style, the typical terrace composition has several notable features, in particular the recessed porches with semi-circular arches, the fine first floor window mouldings with bracketed hoods, the unusual name plate motif and large fence piers. It is an essential part of East Melbourne and a fine example of a distinctive building type.
The street facade has been painted and the original contrast between exposed brickwork and stucco mouldings has been lost.
The cast iron palisade fence is compatible with the terrace. The front gardens have been concreted.
