Statement of Significance

The row of three terrace houses, Nepean Terrace, at 128-132 Gipps Street was erected in 1863-64 by Joseph Dean for Henry Dyer, a lime and cement merchant.
Some additions were undertaken in the 1880's. The terrace has housed a diverse selection of merchants and businessmen including A MacKay, MLA; L Karat, Inspector of Police; A Black, Assistant Surveyor General.
The two storey structure of handmade bricks has a one storey verandah. Nepean Terrace is an early and fine example of terrace house architecture and is notable for its association with prominent merchants and businessmen. Designed in the conservative classical style, the typical composition is enhanced by the fine timber verandah with distinctive flat arches. The exposed brick surfaces are indicative of early times and in their unpainted state considerably enhance the composition. The terrace is an outstanding part of the East Melbourne precinct. The cast iron palisade fence is compatible with the terrace.
