Statement of Significance

The pair of terraces houses, Casa de Maria and Casa de Juana, 123-125 Gipps Street, were erected in 1887-88 by Smith and Upton for C Allee. The architect was William Pitt, a prolific boom style architect. The two storey rendered brick facade has a two storey cast iron vernadah and an elaborate cornice and balustrade.
This is a fine example of boom style terrace architecture and a notable domestic example of the architect William Pitt. The typical terrace composition is enhanced by fine restrained detailing.
Ornament is carefully positioned on the end piers to enhance the cast iron decoration and the cornice parapet is elaborated around the appropriate exotic name. The houses are an essential feature of the East Melbourne precinct and a typical example of a distinctive Melbourne building type. The first floor balustrade of Case de Maria has been covered with solid panels; the cast iron palisade fences are compatible with the houses.
