Statement of Significance

The Lodge House designed c1959 by its architect-owner Keith Lodge is significant at a regional level. It is a late example from a small but important collection of houses described by Robin Boyd as "structural-functional" built in Melbourne during the 1950s. These houses are significant for their bold expression of, and experiment with non-traditional structure. In this case two interlinking M shaped steel frames elevate the living and sleeping spaces of the Lodge House above the 1934 Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works flood level in East Kew. Subsequent alterations, additions and repainting have reduced the visual impact of structural raison d'etre of the design but do not detract from its significance.
