Statement of Significance

Invergowrie was built after 1845 for businessman and politician Sir James Palmer. The rambling bluestone house, on an elevated site, has been extensively extended and harmoniously altered, externally. The slate roofed, single storied, (originally with attic), house, features projecting gabled wings with bargeboards, decorated dormer windows, oriels and a bellcote. The old dining room and its joinery are most distinguished.

Invergowrie is an early house in the uncommon Picturesque Gothic style, of architectural consequence even in its extended and altered state and is important for its historical associations and as the focus of an area of historic and townscape importance. The old dining room is a most distinctive gothic interior, whilst externally architectural details including the bellcote, oriels and bargeboard decorated dormers are unusual. The former gate lodge, now No 8 Burwood Road, still stands and is significant.

Invergowrie has suffered much alteration, particularly early this century when the attic storey was removed internally. Present use is as offices. The old gate lodge (B1012) stands on a suburban allotment some distance away.
