Statement of Significance

The pair of terrace houses at 171-173 Drummond Street were erected in 1869 for Estevan Parar. The two storey brick structure has a rendered facade with two storey timber and cast iron gallery. There is no parapet. The cast iron palisade fence is original.
This is an important pair of terrace houses in the conservative classical style. Their architectural composition is typical and their early date notable. The consistent use of Greek motifs, however, is unusual and of exceptional interest. Notable elements include the key pattern in the freizes, the palmette brackets, balustrade panels and fence palisades and the window sills with mutules below. The pair are an essential part of the Drummond Street precinct and a fine example of a building type which is a distinctive feature of inner suburban Melbourne. The terraces are externally intact and maintained in good condition. The interiors have not been inspected.
