Statement of Significance

Grace Park House,Hawthorn, was designed by Architect John Gill and built for publican Michael Lynch in 1857, with subsequent additions. The stuccoed, two storey house rests on extensive bluestone cellars. Symmetrically arranged, the house features shuttered french doors opening onto the double-storied, timber framed verandah which faces the main facades and sits on squat bluestone columns. The actual verandah posts may not be original.
Grace Park House is one of the earliest surviving houses in the Hawthorn area and is of architectural consequence as a rare example of the symmetrical, Georgian style houses of the period. Michael Lynch, the builder of the house, was a well known early Melbourne citizen and an early settler in Hawthorn. Although in a run-down state externally, the shuttered French doors and the squat bluestone columns supporting the verandah posts are features of note.
Grace Park House is externally quite intact and structurally sound but decrepit in appearance. The verandah is in fair condition and the posts may not be original. The interior was not available for inspection.
