Statement of Significance

Seronak, a substantial Bungalow style house built in 1924, is of historical and social importance at the Regional level.
Seronak has strong associations with the horse industry, which was centred in Melbourne, and more specifically in Flemington and Newmarket.
It was built for Isaac Little, who made a good living from horse trading, exporting horses to nearby British colonies such as India and Singapore (Seronak is believed to be Malay for agreeable), in the early years of this century, and most probably supplied the British and Australian forces in the Boer War, and WW1.
The business was conducted from large stables to the side, which is now the site of a small park. The substantial Canterbury Street stables, built in 1903, now used as a community centre, was also part of the industry, and is located in part of the park, directly behind the house, enhancing the historical associations with the horse industry.
Designed in a conservative, but unusual and substantial Bungalow style, with Edwardian influences, it is a landmark in the area, and is almost the only larger, upper middle calss residences remaining.
