Statement of Significance

The1894 cast iron verandah on the present island platform was transferred from the original station at Flinders Street and re-erected at Hawthorn in 1901.The scale of the island platform is vast and features large cast iron columns supporting the roof structure which spans the full width of the platform. The station buildings are of timber construction and have been substantially altered over the years.
Other important elements in the complex include the iron railings and ramped station approach, both verandahs and footbridge.
Hawthorn is an important historic building in its urban context and the remainder of the station complex is classified.
