Designed in 1957 by John La Gerche for Coates Building Ltd, the Coates Building is of state architectural significance as being the second building in Melbourne to have a fully glazed multi-storey commercial curtain-wall facade. It is also significant as being the only known co-operatively owned and developed multi-storey commercial building in the Central Activities District.
