As a result of an architectural competition, A & K Henderson won the right to design the new headquarters of the National Bank replacing the earlier two-storey Renaissance Revival building on the site. Henderson's design was visionary. In order to preserve the memory of the older building, the orders of its ground and first floors were repeated in the ground and top floors of the new building with a modern infill between. In recent years the pattern has continued with an extension to the west which has again used a reduced version of the existing architectural orders. In 1930 it won two awards in the Herald Competition for the most beautiful building in Melbourne.
