Statement of Significance

Designed by Oakley and Parkes and erected in 1959, the Brighton Civic Centre is of State importance as a skilful evocation of the still great influence of Frank Lloyd Wright on the architectural profession of Australia, post Second War, as well as an important work from the established architectural firm of Oakley and Parkes. The internal and external form and spaces created are distinctive within the State (if not Australia) for a public office from this era. The building and its setting are also well-preserved, with notable Featherstone furnishings, as a rare example of municipal office building from the immediate Post-war era. Built for the centenary of municipal formation, the complex is symbolic of Brighton's civic and community political life over an extended period, and the desire for a progressive image for their new civic centre.
