Statement of Significance

The New Works area is of State cultural significance as it provides substantial evidence of major nineteenth century engineering construction works designed to enable regular and reliable water transport between the Lakes area and metropolitan centres. The Entrance itself exemplifies the success of the project, while the cottages provide the most evocative evidence of the process of construction, and the need for a resident workforce.

The Entrance is a notable engineering achievement, and is an excellent example of the work of several important designers, including William Wardell, Inspector General of Public Works, and Sir John Coode, a distinguished harbour engineer.

The group of extant cottages are also important as beach houses. Their isolated setting, virtually continuous use as beach houses, and long and continuing association with several Gippsland families provides clear evidence of the past lifestyles and traditions associated with these cottages.

The cottages are also associated with noted Gippsland figures such as author Mary Grant Bruce and artist Flora (Minter) Gregson.
