Statement of Significance

The two-storey buildings that today comprise the Imperial Hotel and a shopping row are believed to date from 1864 but these may have been extended from earlier single-storey shops erected from 1856. The building is a landmark at the top of Bourke Street and provides an important 19th century context to Parliament House.
