Statement of Significance

Designed by George Johnson, who was articled to George Hull at Derby, Architect to the Midland Railway Company, and built in 1874. The market has a particularly fine arched timber roof reminiscent of roofs of railway stations in England. The archways in Blackwood and Courtney Streets are notable. The Metropolitan Hotel is part of the same complex and the two buildings have been well integrated.
