Statement of Significance

Eliza Terrace, constructed in 1865 is of National significance for architectural and historical reasons.
Three wide two storey terrace houses of extreme distinction, especially for their cast ironwork. The verandah level is a cement-faced loggia of arcading overlaid by pilasters. The balcony has very distinctive balustrade iron and a deepish frieze carried on a wooden bar. There is a cast iron gutter with lions' heads at the joints, and a continuous strip of acroteria projecting upwards from the eaves line. There are sawn basalt verandah floors, and the fence is of cast rather than wrought palisading.
The terraces are also important as essential elements of Barry Square (now University Square), one of the relatively few residential squares to have been developed in inner Melbourne, and one that includes a number of terraces of superior design.
