Statement of Significance

One of the earliest Salvation Army halls or barracks in Australia, this was the second built in Victoria and was then (1883) the second largest outside London. This hall is particularly significant historically because of its construction for Victoria's Number One Corp (Hotham) and its proximity to the area where the Army began its services in this State, among much dissension.
It is also the major part of a series of surviving halls, all designed after a Tudor revival manner and, of the state's two earliest halls, the North Melbourne example is by far the more architecturally pretentious and is more near complete inside and out, despite stuccoing this century.
