Built in 1885 for the German Club and designed by the noted architect J A B Koch, this building is recognisable as a fine Renaissance revival facade (flanked by extensive but bland additions) and retains the notable concert/lecture hall said to have been the lecture venue for Melbourne's most distinguished German resident, Baron Von Muller.
Self contained and not unsympathetic to the earlier building are works carried out for the Naval & Military Club which take on their own persona from the 50 year occupation by this influential club. These works include the bar, stair case and stair hall and were designed by the noted architect of the Shrine, Philip Hudson. Prominent members of the club include Sir John Monash (president 1921-31), Sir John Lavarack (president 1937) and General Sir Thomas Blamey (president 1946, 51).
Among the small number of surviving 19th century club buildings, this building gains distinction from its construction for a minority ethnic group and its subsequent occupation and remodelling by the Naval & Military Club as a direct expression of its growth after World War 1.
