Statement of Significance

Charterisville, 77 - 79 Burke Road North, Ivanhoe, was built circa 1840 for David Charteris McArthur of the Bank of Australasia. Construction is a combination of brick, bluestone and locally quarried sandstone, with a slate roof. The house, believed to have been built in stages, presented until recently a long, symmetrical facade, with twin projecting rooms and bay windows about a central verandah. Long flanking wings returned to form a courtyard.

Charterisville,is a dwelling of both historical and architectural importance.

The house is one of the earliest surviving houses in the State, especially in the Melbourne area and is of particular importance in the district's history. Architecturally, although the Colonial style building has been severely defaced, its importance remains. The house is a very early and substantial stone house, of note particularly for the use of locally quarried stone and its planning.

Charterisville has been partially demolished in recent years, but is otherwise in good condition.
