REVISED STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE, CONTEXT, 2010 What is significant?
How is it significant?
Why is it significant? It is historically significant for its connection with Sulina Sutherland and the Sutherland homes for neglected and destitute children, which was known across the State for its work (Criteria A & H). The orphanage is socially significant as a public institution, which has served the Shire for a long period of time (Criteria G).
The c1929 Sutherland Homes orphanage excluding the later skillion roof wing on the north east corner of the building.
The Sutherland homes orphanage building is historically, architecturally and socially significant to the Shire of Nillumbik.
The orphanage building is architecturally significant for its external, near original, state and because of its sophisticated Spanish Mission design by the well known architects Sydney Smith Ogg & Serpell, who were leading exponents of the beaux-arts style, and because few similar buildings from the period exist within the Shire (Criteria B, F & E).
