What is significant?
Brunswick Free Kindergarten, 61 Glenlyon Road, Brunswick to the extent of the 1929 building, any surviving fittings and fixtures and trees dating from the 1930s in the northern play area.

Brunswick Free Kindergarten, 61 Glenlyon Road, Brunswick is of local to the city of Moreland and state historic significance.

Why is it significant?
Of State historic significance, as one of the first kindergartens affiliated with the Free Kindergarten Union, a pioneering voluntary organisation established in 1908, responsible for a initiatives including the training of kindergarten teachers, medical and dental inspection of preschool children and funding of kindergartens and their staff in Victoria. (AHC Criteria A.4, D.2 & G.1)

It is of local historic significance for its continued provision of preschool education in Brunswick from 1924, occupying the same building for the past 78 years of its 80 years, and for its association with James Allard, noted Brunswick director of the Cornwell Pottery Company and owner of the land on which the kindergarten was constructed.
