Statement of Significance

Two churches stand on this site. One was erected as the second Presbyterian church in Brunswick in 1865 and the other, built in 1885, was the third.

The 1865 church is a simple bluestone gothic structure designed by the celebrated architect, Charles Webb. Few of Webb's earlier churches remain. The 1885 church was designed by well-known architect Evander McIver.

The former Presbyterian church buildings are of architectural and historic importance for the following reasons:

1. Both churches on the site are by notable architects, the 1865 church by Charles Webb and the 1885 church by Evander McIver.

2. The 1880s church was designed using a sympathetic approach to the earlier church byrepeating specific design elements. Both churches adopt the gothic style with broach spires and contrasting window surrounds.

3. The cream brick spires of the bluestone church is unique and of particular importance in Brunswick, where the cream brick was first produced.

4. Both buildings are essentially intact in form and detail.
