Statement of Significance

"Avalon" was built at no. 8 Sidwell Avenue by the property developer, Charles T. Suhr, in 1926-28. It is of historic interest and aesthetic importance. It is historically interesting (Criterion A) because it demonstrates an aspect of Suhr's work as a builder in Sidwell Avenue, other bungalows of lesser importance surviving in the street. It is of aesthetic importance (Criterion E) as a substantial house of its period creatively interpreting the stylistic influences of the inter-war years and being noteworthy for its development of Arts and Crafts themes.
