Statement of Significance

The "Rothesay Court Flats" were built between 1928 and 1931 for Mrs. Amy Gardner and Mrs. Stella Russell and may include remnants of the pre-existing house known as "St. Sidwell's. The complex is historically of interest and aesthetically important. It is of interest historically (Criterion A) for its capacity to demonstrate the wave of flat building in East St. Kilda characteristic of the inter war years and especially prominent to the west. It is aesthetically important (Criterion E) as an outstanding Neo-Classical complex of its type, being distinctive for its rigorous symmetry, juxtaposition of Tuscan porticoes and terraced garden.
