Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The former Poowong Pioneer Store, at 5 Nyora Road, Poowong, built in c.1906, is significant. The weatherboard gabled roof, single storey Federation former shop has a reconstructed front triangular parapet above a straight roofed street verandah supported by non-original turned posts. There are three of four segmentally arched valance between these turned posts. Above the verandah roofline, on the parapet, is a sign panel. There are a pair of finial posts at the end of the sign panel, and additional finial at the peak of the parapet frame. The frontage includes an early timber framed shopfront with recessed entry and a single double hung window. There is a two-storey building at the rear of the store.
Non-original alterations and additions, other than those specified above, are not significant.
How is it significant?
The former Poowong Pioneer Store, at 5 Nyora Road, Poowong, is of local historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire .
Why is it significant?
Historically, the former Poowong Pioneer Store is significant for the long and continuing use of this site as a commercial store for almost 150 years, since 1879. The building demonstrates the depth of commercial history within Poowong. It also demonstrates the early development of Poowong from the early stages of settlement. (Criterion A)
Aesthetically, the building is a superior example within the Shire of a large timber Federation shop. The large frontage, almost double that of a classic federation commercial building, the intact recessed entryway, the original straight roof verandah and the parapet illustrate a reasonably intact property of high heritage integrity. The building also significantly contributes to the aesthetic of Poowong. (Criterion E)
