How is it significant?
Fish Creek Primary School No. 3028 is of local historic, social and aesthetic significance to South Gippsland Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, the 1901 Fish Creek school is one of the oldest extant school buildings in South Gippsland Shire and is associated with the development of Fish Creek in the early twentieth century. The relocation of the school to this larger site in 1926 and the addition of the former Mirboo South classroom in 1929 demonstrates the increase in enrolments due to closer settlement after World War I, as well as the increasing centralisation of schools across the South Gippsland Shire, from the late 1920s onwards. (Criterion A)
Aesthetically, it is an example of cojoined one room schools, which demonstrates the consistency of rural school design during the Federation and interwar periods. (Criterion E)
Socially, it is significant as a place that has strong associations with the Fish Creek community through its use as the local school for almost 100 years on the current site. The school was established with the support of the local community, and they have continued to play an active role in the development of the school since its opening. (Criterion G)
