Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Ailsa Street precinct, which is a residential area comprising Inter-war era houses constructed c.1935 to c.1940, at 1-15 and 20-24 Ailsa Street, Ascot Vale is significant. The following buildings and features contribute to the significance of the place:

- The Contributory houses and garages at 1-15 & 20-24 Ailsa Street.
- The low front and side fences constructed of brick and cyclone wire.
- Original garden elements including concrete paths and driveways.
- The visual homogeneity created by the similar form, styling, materials and siting of the houses.
- The extent to which development in one period is apparent.
- The low front fences, which allow views to the front and side elevations of the houses and enhances the 'garden suburb' character.
- The high intactness of the majority of the houses when viewed from the street.

Non-original alterations and additions to the Contributory houses are not significant.

How is it significant?
The Ailsa Street precinct is of local aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley.

Why is it significant?
Aesthetically, the precinct is significant as a visually homogeneous streetscape of Inter-war houses, which are related in scale, form and detailing. The aesthetic qualities of the precinct is enhanced by the high degree of intactness of the houses and garages, which are complemented by original front fences, pathways and driveways and garden landscaping.
