SIGNIFICANCE: »Built to accommodate the children in the newly developed Housing Commission Estates in north Hamilton. Locally significant as an example of the ubiquitous standard design.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Kent Road Primary School No. 4847

Kent Road, North Hamilton

This building has local significance for its architectural interest as a standard design and its historical associations with the development of primary education in the Hamilton district, which began with the formation of the Grange township in the 1850s. Government primary schools were the first educational establishments founded in Hamilton. The Kent Road Primary School, an eight classroom unit, was officially opened in 1966 to meet the needs of a growing population in North Hamilton. There were additions to the school in 1968 and 1969 in the form of temporary classtrooms. ([i]) The design and form of construction had been used previously at the George Street Primary School as well as all over the state. The buildings are significantly intact and in excellent condition.
