STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Fleetwood

21 Gray Street

Fleetwood was designed by Mr A P Daniel, an architect from Mt Gambier, for the grazier Archibald Cameron, in 1925 and was built by local builders Eddy & Goode of Gray St, Hamilton. The unsuccessful tenderer quoted 900 pounds. The actual cost was at least 1,200 pounds. ([i]) The garden was designed and laid out by Mr L M Hughan (late AIF) of Burnside Nursery, Kennedy St, Hamilton for 51 pounds and 13 shillings. ([ii]) Hughan laid out many gardens in Hamilton and the surrounding district.

The most important Californian bungalow in Hamilton, Fleetwood stands at the forefront of its style and building type. It uses the classic forms, details and materials of the style distinctively. The use of pebbles on the piers is especially noteworthy.

The garden at fleetwood consisted of gravel paths surrounding the house with a curved path to the front door. The lawns were of Buffalo grass with beds consisting mostly of roses. The front garden is largely intact and is important in complimenting the house and having been designed by a local nurseryman. Receipts for the work are held by the present owner.

[i] The present owner, grandson of the first owner, holds various documents from construction date.

[ii] Hughan's grandson is the present gardener of the Hospital and of the Grange Hostel opposite.
