Statement of Significance

The two similar detached houses at 27 and 29 Sydney Street, Ascot Vale, were in existence by 1892. They are aesthetically important. This importance (Criterion E) is established by their stylistic exuberance epitomising the excesses of the Land Boom period and demonstrating that money could be lavished with dramatic effect on smaller villas as well as the mansions of the commercial classes. The broken cement pediments and porches combine with the use of polychrome brickwork to impart distinction to both buildings.
