Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The shops at 72-80 Puckle Street, Moonee Ponds built in two stages in 1890 and 1902, the first stage being built for Charles Humffray as the Equitable Drapery Store and the second for James King, and the shopfront added in the inter-war period are significant.

Non original alterations and additions other than specified above are not significant.

How is it significant?
The shops at 72-80 Puckle Street, Moonee Ponds are of historic and aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley.

Why is it significant?
They are historically significant as early shops in Puckle Street, adding to its historic character but now compromised by the extent of defacement. The survival of the interior linings and arcaded party wall inside the main shop at no.78 is an unusual and contributory element, strengthening the sense of history in this early shopping centre. (Criterion A)

The shopfront is of aesthetic significance as a fine and rare example of inter-war commercial architecture. Very few original shopfronts survive and the significance of this example is therefore enhanced by its rarity value. (Criteria B & D)
