Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The former Blacksmith and residence was one of three located in Tarrington prior to the turn of the century. The blacksmith's shop and residence are located on the Hamilton Highway in the centre of Tarrington. Two timber framed weatherboard structures are located on the site, the older of the two is the cottage and former smithy; a symmetrical cottage with a central ledge and brace door and two 12 pane double hung sash windows. The gable roof is contiguous with the simple post supported verandah. It is clad in corrugated iron (with the recent insertion of 'Laserlight' sheets above the windows). There is a substantial painted brick chimney at the eastern end of the building and a rear verandah. The later building is a typical house of the turn of the century. The windows are double hung sashes. The corrugated iron roof is hipped. It has a timber post supported verandah, recently modified. The history of the ownership of the smithy is not known, nor is the history of ownership of the land. Both buildings survive in good condition and retain a fair degree of external integrity.
How is it significant?
The former blacksmith's shop and residence is of historical significance to the township of Tarrington and the Southern Grampians Shire.

Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance as it provides an example of a previous way of life, illustrating the importance of the horse for transport, pastoralism and industry in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. It represents a trade that is no longer practiced, but has been associated with the development of the town since earliest settlement.
