Statement of Significance

What is significant?
An individual Ceiba speciosa (Floss Silk Tree) located in the Melbourne Royal Botanic Gardens, to the west of the volcano and south of the arid garden. 
How is it significant?
The tree is significant for scientific, aesthetic and social reasons at the Regional level. 
Why is it significant?
This Floss Silk Tree is of scientific significance for its rarity on the National Trust of Australia (Victoria)’s Significant Tree Register, as there are no other examples listed on the register at the time of nomination. It is also significant for its outstanding size, especially height. Of all the Ceiba known in the State, this one appears to be the largest within the gardens, and possibly the largest within Victoria. 
 
Additionally, this Floss Silk Tree is of aesthetic significance as it is a better than average example of the species. It is also socially significant within the landscape context of this historic garden.
