Statement of Significance
What is significant?
A stand of two remnant remaining White Cypress-pines located at the Maribyrnong Defence Site.
How is it significant?
The trees are significant for scientific and social reasons at the Regional level.
Why is it significant?
These impressive trees are scientifically significant for their large size. All three dimensions (circumference, height and spread) fall within range of other specimens of this species on the Register. Furthermore, these trees were once part of a larger stand but now only 2 remain and are the only known remaining remnant Callitris glaucophylla specimens in metropolitan Melbourne. These trees are priceless in terms of their genetic stock, and ability to provide local provenance for revegetation works in the area. If these remaining two trees die, the local provenance of Callitris glaucophylla will be lost forever. They represent an important relic population, perhaps the last trees of their kind in metropolitan Melbourne (Australian Heritage Database, 2004).
