Why is it significant?
This Southern Magnolia is a good specimen Regionally significant for its alleged historic connection with Baron Ferdinand von Mueller. It is believed that this tree is one of five Southern Magnolias imported to the region possibly by Baron Ferdinand von Mueller in the 1860s. Another specimen was planted at the Jamieson Courthouse Hotel, and a third on Mt Buller Road in Mansfield. The fourth tree was believed to be at Merton however this specimen has not been found. There was one other tree however its location is unknown and it is presumed to have died. The Alzburg Resort (former Convent of Mercy and Sacred Heart College) Southern Magnolia is also socially significant for its contribution to the grounds of one of the earliest buildings in Mansfield.
