STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The two storey brick residence 'Fernshaw' on the Western Beach at Geelong was erected in 1876 for prominent Geelong woolbroker HM Strachan. The architects were Davidson and Henderson, a firm of Scottish educated architects whose work is characterised by the innovative eclecticism of "Fernshaw' and the associated stables, coach house and quarters at the rear. 'Fernshaw' is one of the most significant of the works of Davidson and Henderson and most notable for the finely detailed iron balcony verandah and ornament derived from Victorian gothic traditions.
