Statement of Significance

What is significant?
A historical stand of two California Pine trees on the corner of Monash Way and 3 Balfour Place in Churchill.
How is it significant?
This stand is significant for historic reasons at the Regional level.
Why is it significant?
The stand is significant for historic reasons as it is associated with the site of the first school in the town now known as Churchill.
No.3350 Eel Hole Creek State School (later renamed to No.3350 Hazelwood South State School) opened on 22 January 1900. In 1901, John Flynn (later known as Flynn of the Inland, pioneer of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia) was a Temporary Head Teacher there for five and a half months. While the planting date of these trees cannot be confirmed, some believe the trees have a possible connection with John Flynn (no current evidence).
While many other large California Pines around the state are declining or have died, these two pines have shown remarkable resilience to fire (in 1935 and 1944) and the expansion of the town.
