Statement of Significance
What is significant?
A single Narrow-leaved Peppermint tree in the north-western section of an unnamed bushland reserve in Gisborne. The tree is located near the access gate on Woodland Drive.
How is it significant?
This Narrow-leaved Peppermint tree is significant for scientific and social reasons at the Regional level.
Why is it significant?
The tree is scientifically significant for its large size as it has an unusually broad, spreading crown resulting in a rapid diameter growth rate. This size and appearance is outstanding compared to other specimens of the same species. The tree dominates the landscape upon entrance of the Reserve. The tree is also significant for its contribution to the local landscape as it supports a rare, fragmented and endangered vegetation community and provides habitat in a remnant bushland reserve located on a Volcanic Scoria Cone which has been severely altered by human activities in the past. The Friends of Mt Gisborne Reserve and the local community who visit this Reserve value the trees stature and contribution to the area.
