Statement of Significance

What is significant?
A 34 m tall River Red Gum tree with an interesting low canopy located on a private property in Ladys Pass.
How is it significant?
This River Red Gum is significant for scientific and social reasons at the Regional level.
Why is it significant?
This River Red Gum is significant for scientific reasons as it is an outstanding specimen of the species with an impressive height of 34 m (for the region). Most River Red Gums of equal size are found along the Goulburn and Murray Rivers but this River Red Gum is located further from the flood plains and is isolated. It has an interestingly low canopy (not commonly seen in this species) and a round crown. It has shown impressive resilience to the changes in its landscape (particularly agricultural pressures) and robustness against the strong winds that occur in the region.

Additionally, the tree is significant for its contribution to the landscape. Considering the agricultural context of the region, this tree is native and has not succumbed to intense grazing pressures. It provides significant shade on the property (for native animals and sheep) and habitat compared to other trees in the area which are much smaller.
