WASHINGTONIA FILIFERA

The individual Desert Fan Palm which is in the Melbourne General Cemetery, on the corner of Fifth and Sixth Avenues.  

This Desert Fan Palm is significant for aesthetic and social reasons at the Regional level. 

This specimen is the last Desert Fan Palm left in the Melbourne General Cemetery, others having been removed by management over the last 50 years. The tree is significant for aesthetic reasons as it is one of the taller trees in the cemetery and has an impressive and complete skirt (consisting of dead fronds around the trunk). Additionally, the tree is significant for its contribution to the landscape as it visually compliments the sombre appearance of the Victorian style cemetery and stands out as one of the sparse trees in that section of the cemetery.
