This Crimson King Maple is located in Forest Glade Gardens,Mount Macedon.

This Crimson King Maple is significant for scientific, social and aesthetic reasons at the Regional level.

Why is it significant?

This Crimson King Maple is notable for its shape and form, particularly its trunk, and it is one of the largest examples of the cultivar known by the Significant Tree Committee. There iscurrentlyonlyone other Crimson King Maple in the Significant Tree Register, in Buninyong Botanic Gardens, Ballarat (T11436).

The tree grows in Forest Glade Gardens, a14 acregarden in Mount Macedon. The Newton family purchased the land in 1941, then comprised of orchards and paddocks, and set about creating the gardens. In 1971 Forest Glade was acquired by Cyril Stokes. The gardens were developed significantly in the 1970s, but the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983 decimatedmuch of the original gardens. However, many of the larger trees survived, including thisCrimson King Maple. Post-fire, the owners embarked on a large planting program across the property, developing the gardens into a noteworthy collection of cool climate plants.
