What is significant? This Red Beech is located in Forest Glade Gardens,Mount Macedon. How is it significant? This Red Beech is significant for scientific, social and aesthetic
reasons at the State level. Why is it significant? The Red Beech is endemic to New Zealand and uncommon in Victoria;
there is currently only one other example in the Significant Tree
Register (T12020).At 18.5m with a canopy spread of 11m, this is avery
large example of the species. The tree grows in Forest Glade Gardens, a 14 acre garden in Mount
Macedon. The Newton family purchased the land in 1941, then comprised
of orchards and paddocks, and set about creating the gardens. In 1971
Forest Glade was acquired by Cyril Stokes. The gardens were developed
significantly in the 1970s, but the Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983
decimated much of the original gardens. However, many of the larger
trees survived, including this Red Beech.Post-fire, the owners
embarked on a large planting program across the property, developing
